To commemorate the 113th anniversary of the birth of Qian Weichang (1912-2010), a renowned scientist and educator from Wuxi, the modern Xiju Opera Qian Weichang premiered at the Wuxi People's Grand Theater on the evening of July 4.
The play follows Qian on a century-spanning journey through four chapters: his impassioned transition from literary studies to science, his determined return from overseas study to dedicate himself to China's scientific development, his pioneering role in establishing modern mechanics in New China, and his selfless devotion to education.
As Wuxi's first-ever theatrical performance focusing on "the father of Chinese modern mechanics", the production offers an innovative fusion of traditional Xiju Opera artistry with contemporary musical and visual expression.

The stage design is pure white to spotlight academic integrity, while vibrant red elements threaded throughout the performance symbolize Qian's patriotic spirit. Traditional Xiju Opera vocals intertwine with symphonic cello melodies, while red silk dances represent an undying passion for science, ultimately achieving a convergence of science and aesthetic brilliance.
Produced by the Wuxi Xiju Opera Theater, the production stars renowned Xiju Opera performers Wang Ziyu and Cai Yu in the lead roles of scientist Qian Weichang and his wife Kong Xiangying, respectively.
Following the premiere, the opera will embark on a national tour. Cai Yu, director of the Wuxi Xiju Opera Theater, said that the work required years of preparation and two months of intensive rehearsal. "We hope this opera honors Qian's story, celebrates Wuxi's cultural heritage, and conveys China's voice," she said.
